The major advantage of studying such mutant mice is that we can genetically manipulate a brain region to see how a normally functioning neuronal population is affected. This approach circumvents the complicating factors of studying the human brain. Furthermore, behavioral studies in these mice provide an insight into the function of the putative deficient region, which can then be further studied in a human brain sample. These behavioral tests will be paired with a histological and immunohistochemical analysis of the brains of these mice to determine which neuroanatomical structures and neuronal populations are altered by the genetic manipulations.
